Joan Kuhl joined the Youth Ambassador's bi-weekly conversation to talk about building confidence.

This month, the Lindsey Vonn Foundation Youth Ambassadors participated in a thoughtful conversation with leadership expert Joan Kuhl, author of Dig Your Heels In and Girls &, who led a discussion on confidence and resilience.

Joan introduced the concept of the “toxic trio” — imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and fear of failure — and how these challenges can impact confidence at every stage of life. Our Youth Ambassadors shared personal stories about navigating setbacks in sport, school, and leadership, as well as the importance of supporting one another along the way.

“Confidence isn’t the absence of doubt — it’s learning how to move forward even when those doubts show up.”

One especially meaningful moment came when Youth Ambassador Clara Slack encouraged Joan’s eleven-year-old daughter, Addison—who is currently dealing with an injury—to focus on what she can do rather than what she can’t, which perfectly captured the spirit of mentorship and community that defines our Youth Ambassador program.

A key takeaway from this discussion was the "You Are Enough as you Are" framework: a 3-part mindset-building practice that focuses on celebrating individual strengths.

How to feel enough as you are:

  1. Think of 3 strengths. Write them down. Those are yours—no one can take them away from you.

  2. Strengthen your strengths! Do what you love and follow your dreams. Rise up and move mountains.

  3. Put a checkmark next to the strengths that give you energy. Focus on those ones—it brings meaning, purpose, and connection.

We’re so grateful to Joan for sharing her wisdom and helping inspire the next generation of leaders.
